Reflection On Web Conference 3/6/11

Wow, what a speed reading event. Over 100 participants. I knew very little about web conferencing before tonight. Had mixed preconceived notions about what a web conference was. Dr. Abernathy did a good job of trying to answer everyone's questions. Most times, other students answered the questions before Dr. Abernathy could read them. I think this is the most valuable feature of the web conference. This peer tutoring and information sharing creates a stronger learning community. I have done nothing with web conferencing in the past. I know plan to find ways to create web conferencing opportunities for my teachers and students. It will be a great way to exchange ideas and answer questions. Reading the transcripts of the past conferences probably would have answered most of the students questions before our conference even began. In the future, I will read the transcripts of the other conferences. Thanks for the conference tonight. It was VERY educational.

Progress Report

The 2008 Progress Report on the Long Range Plan for Technology, 2006-2020 provides us data that demonstrates what has been accomplished over the past few year. Technology is ever changing. The report begins with a survey, NetDay Speak UP 2007. This report was completed by a nonprofit grou,p which reported the use of technology in schools and at home for students grade K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The report goes on to report the progress made in each of the key areas; Teaching and Learning, Educator Preparation and Development, Leadership, Administration, and Instructional Support, and Infrastructure for Technology. In the review of each area are additional resources for support and improvement, along with examples of different pilot programs used to increase learning. The progress report also included information on each of the Education Service Centers in Texas. Region 7 serves our area. Region 7 Service Center provides a variety of services that support each of the four key areas. To supplement and enhance Teaching and Learning, the Service Center provides; administrative, financial and quality control for the Texas Virtual School, Blackboard Online Management System, online teacher certification programs, and the Comprehensive Curriculum, Assessment and Professional Development System. In the area of Educator Preparation and Development, Region 7; provides alternative certification in many different areas and trains candidates in domestic alternative certification programs and EC-4 Bilingual Generalist through distance education. Region 7 provides alternative teacher education programs, as well as support of new teachers. Region 7 has an extensive list of services provided in the Leadership, Administration, and Instructional Leadership. Some of these services include; facilitating the Technology Leadership Group, provides assistance through the Texas Cooperative Purchasing Network to purchase technology equipment, performs reviews of PEIMS data, develops web-based applications, and performs technology audits to support district efforts in continuous improvement. Region 7 offers many other classes and support material. Region 7 has partnerships all throughout the state in an attempt to provide any successful training it can find.

National Educational Plan

The National Educational Technology Plan is a plan developed because education is key to the economic growth, prosperity, and our student’s competing in the global economy of the 21st century. The Technology Plan is powered by two main goals. The first goal states that 60% of the population will hold a 2-year or 4-year degree. Currently only at only 39%. The second goal refers to closing the achievement gap so all students can graduate from high school with the ability to succeed in college and careers. It does acknowledged that these goals are aggressive and that meeting them will post enormous challenges. Education on the national level is dedicated to creating cost-effective strategies to meet the technology expectations of the 21st century. The plan presents a model of education where what and how we teach is based on what our students need to learn, how they learn, where they learn best and when they will learn. We must use what children know and what they are interested in to improve education. Technology is the key to unlock endless opportunities where students can collaborate and learn from others in a learner centered environment. The plan explains the importance of retaining and holding accountable effective teachers. These teachers are the critical component of transforming education, allowing for the model of connected teaching. This model of teaching replaces isolation with connection and is a team activity. Teachers gain knowledge from online collaboration and team structures with other educators. It is also imperative that teachers receive the necessary training to incorporate the new technology into their everyday curriculum. Effective professional development is essential in the fulfillment of this plan. Teachers are going to be held accountable for ensuring their students are ready to compete in the 21st century, and therefore they need to be equipped with the tools and knowledge to do it effectively.

The Texas Long Range Plan for Technology

The Texas Long Range Plan for Technology 2006-2020 is a plan that is shared by school districts across the state to implement technology in the classroom for student learning. The plan has different areas of focus in which to attain goals. I believe that the area of Educator Preparation and Development is one of the most important areas in which to improve upon. Professional development is vital to classroom teachers in order for them to better understand technology and find ways to incorporate it in their classrooms for student learning.
In this area, my campus was assessed and given a developing technology level of progress. This means that technology is used for administrative tasks and classroom management. There are minimal use of online resources and administrators expect teachers to use technology. Seventy-four percent of campuses in the state of Texas fall in this category. Nationally, states have set the bar high in this area through the use of professional development. Our state and our campus are currently improving professional development for educators in order to keep up with the progress of the nation.
My campus is trying improve upon this area through means of professional development for teachers. We understand how important it is for teachers to learn new technology as it is fast changing and student demanding. The state has provided districts with standards for professional development. Educators and Leaders alike are required to attain a recommended amount of hours per year for professional development and growth. This tends to be the trend as a nation as states struggle to meet the demands of the No Child Left Behind Laws.
I believe that in order for my campus to improve in this area that our professional development should be more specific oriented. We are required by the state to attend professional development training courses and workshops. We are not required to attend technology workshops nor do we have to have a certain amount of hours in the area of technology. This would really be beneficial to my campus, educators, and to the state in order to keep up with nationally and more importantly worldly trends. This would contribute to reaching our goals as a campus, as a state, and as a nation.

Plan Revisions

After discussing the action plan with my site supervisor, he told me to make 3 changes or revisions to my action plan.
1. He said that my action plan was to much, that I tried to implement to many steps into solving our bullying problem at my school. So I went back and made sure that the action steps that I had were changed so that they are now more concise and realistic. I made sure that the correct practices and procedures are in place to make sure that the program is implemented effectively.
2. He said to make sure that I have the resources necessary to make sure that this plan is able to succeed throughout the school year. I asked him professional opinion on what resources were missing or that I need to include.
3. The last revision he recommended is to make sure that I have monthly evaluations on the effectiveness of the program. That I must keep the data from these evaluations to see if the program is having a positive effect on the school climate. This way, with this data, I can show the stakeholders of the school community the positive changes of the anti-bullying program. With the positive news, the program can get more support from the community and the parents of the students. This will only make the program more effective and efficient.
